Domain Registration

One of the largest growing and in demand services available online is the business of domain registration. With so many companies offering these services, how do you find one that is equipped to handle you as a client – and your special needs?

True, there are many varieties of domain registrars offering an ever-growing multitude of domain registration services. Some companies like Namecheap.com specialize in the practice of domain registration and only the closest services related to domain ownership and administration. Other providers such as Godaddy.com provide not only registry services, but also delve into hosting, SSL certificates, and monetizing investment domain registrations. While still other registrars like Enom.com allow you the privileges of domain reselling, where you can take on the role of storefront, and they provide the backend support – giving you bargain basement pricing.

Chances are, however, that you are in the need of one, two, or only a small handful of domain names to take care of your needs. Acquiring domain names that are in horizontal relationships with your TLD (top level domain) plus the common misspellings of your name are commonplace. Not securing these domains for yourself could potentially allow others with cunning marketing skills to skim from your visitor-base and swipe your potential customers and profits.

Another wise purchase to make with your domain registration is the private registration services that are normally available through your registrar or a third party working with your domain registry. Private registration allows you to remain hidden from the spam trolling bots that would steal your user information, address and phone number from public whois databases. Protecting this information is one more step in preventing email spam, junk mail, and identity theft. The private registry services company will act as your go-between and filter any emails and wanton junk mail that come to their attention via service. It is their data that will display in your public whois listing, and you will only be notified when non-spam email comes through the service.

You are limited (currently) to ten years of domain registration at any given time on your domain name. This means that you can purchase a domain in 2008 and tack on an additional nine years to the default one-year registration. This gives you a locked price for the duration of years you choose – as well as the certainty that you will be the sole owner of that domain. You can renew your domain at any time, provided the domain registration expiration does not exceed ten years from the current date.
