Looking at Website Hosting From the Inside Out

New to hosting and need to know what to look for in a domain host? Similar to being taken for all you're worth at the auto mechanic - web hosting providers can be a bit tricky and offer services you may not need - or provide paid services that are normally free. Not all hosting providers are crooks mind you - in fact most are reputable and fit their niche markets to a "T". And it only takes a few bad apple to ruin the Hosting Community.

There are four things to look at when picking a web host - and these are the most crucial to your web site, and to your monthly price tag. You must know and understand disk space, bandwidth/transfer, platform, and service and support.

Disk Space
This is the amount of data you can store on your hosting account. Files can be HTML or scripting files, video, music or other multimedia. You can store virtually anything you want on your hosting server.

Bandwidth or Monthly Transfer
Everything that you store on your web server is accessible by the public in some fashion. This is why you have a hosting account, to make files and directories available to your clients, friends and whoever finds their way to your corner of the Internet. Each time an element is viewed or downloaded - the size of the item is recorded and added to your transfer record. Once you hit your limit of bandwidth your site will deactivate until your account renews, or your account will automatically be billed for the overage.

Platform or Operating System
Know full well whether you will need a Windows or Linux secure hosting service. Though both are fully capable of running mainstream hosting features - you may find that some providers do not allow extras, or fully-loaded systems.

Service and Support
There is nothing worse than paying for a hosting account, regardless of cost and being locked away from the technicians that could help alleviate your problem. Finding a host with great customer service and knowledgeable technical support is great - before you agree to any service or hosting account make certain you realize when you can leave messages or communicate with the staff - how soon you can expect a response.
